It's a pleasant area for a walk along the Ramparts Promanade to Porrte du Croux, and it's good to see this history being cared for. Even with cloudy skies, it's worth stopping for a couple of photos. I imagine it would earn five stars on a summer day when all the flowers are out.

The city walls are gone, but the old medieval gate, Porte du Croux, is still standing. It's a massive structure and has been restored very well. It once served as a customs house, collecting the city's entry tax. Back then, a drawbridge crossed the Passière stream.

You can still see parts of the old city wall on the right, and the tower now houses the Minervais Archaeological Museum. The gateway itself is imposing, with machicolations and little turrets. There are also visible remains of the old barbican, which had both a defensive and commercial role. A drawbridge used to stand here.

A lovely glimpse of our country's medieval past, and a beautiful postcard view. This is a well-known piece of French heritage.

Porte du Croux is Nevers' oldest gate, dating to the 12th century. The fortified tower was once part of the city walls, and inside there's an exhibition of historical artifacts. From the upper levels you get excellent views over the city. It really lets you feel the medieval atmosphere of Nevers.
