We booked a week in early January 2026, just after David and Matthew took over this former wine estate in late December 2025. They had the small B&B running smoothly right away. The spacious rooms have very high ceilings, fireplaces and luxurious furnishings. There are new modern bathrooms in the main house, while the sweet suites around the pool and hot tub have new kitchens and bathrooms. Everything feels carefully looked after in this 1800s manor, right in the center of the very cute town of Olonzac. The gardens and stately neighborhood are quiet and peaceful. We can’t wait to return and see more of the vineyards and medieval towns nearby.

We crossed the water to visit Olonzac for the first time after friends told us good things about David and Matthew, including from previous barge trips with them in Burgundy and Amsterdam. Eloi Merle is a former wine grower’s mansion, with five rooms in the main building and five garden level gites, each with a kitchenette and loft bedroom. The amenities are modern, and the front garden has a pool and hot tub that were just right for tired bodies after seeing the local historic sites. The garden has a lovely mix of cacti, succulents, shrubs and trees. French breakfasts get the day going, and there are plenty of places nearby for lunch or dinner. There are wineries close by for tastings, and medieval towns within an hour or more. Guides can pick you up right at the hotel. The area produces the most wine in France. Above all, we were struck by the attention to detail and care for guests. This won’t be our last visit to Eloi Merle.

After a long day on the bike, the gardens and Hot Tub were much appreciated, and breakfast was terrific too. The rooms are huge and the facilities are great. Chris and Paul made us feel very welcome during our couple of nights at Eloi Merle. We only wish we’d stayed longer. Maybe next time. Thoroughly recommended.

A stunning house, a lovely breakfast and such congenial hosts. We absolutely loved staying here. SE France with class. I’d happily come back and thoroughly recommend it.

The garden terrace, pool and jacouzzi were lovely, and we had a great breakfast. The beds were perfect, the furniture and layout high quality, and all the modern conveniences were there. Paul and Chris are warm, professional, friendly and fun hosts. The house feels like stepping back to the 18th century, fitting for a place that began as a wine merchant’s villa and later became public. I loved its authentic character and the respectful care the owners give it, right down to the details. I found this gem in Olonzac thanks to the bike tour. If you’re there, book it, you won’t regret it. Thank you, dear Chris and Paul, for your hospitality. We all enjoyed our stay at Eloi Merle!
