Hôtel Le Forestia

The staff were friendly and welcoming, and check-in and checkout were quick and easy. The room was clean, the bed was made up with clean sheets, and despite the heat we slept well. It was surprisingly cool inside during the late-August heatwave, probably because the staff had kept the windows shut and shutters down. Breakfast was only €7 per person, but there was barely anything to choose from. There was no bread, cornflakes or milk, and trays and cutlery were scattered around the small breakfast room. I couldn't find proper dishes either. We'd told them the night before we'd arrive at 9, and just as we were thinking of leaving, a staff member brought out a baguette and three croissants at that exact time. We booked at the last minute to fit our travel plans, and the low price suited our budget. This is really a transit hotel: it's right on the outskirts of town, in an industrial zone with nothing worthwhile within walking distance, and close to the A77. We chose it for the restaurant, only to find it closed on Sunday evening. The dining hall looked like it had once been grand but had lost its shine long ago. The place has clearly seen better days. One Booking reviewer called it Hotel Derelicto, and we thought that was apt. The outside looked Spartan, with rusty stairs, holes in the walls and debris by the entrance. Inside, the old carpet, worn furniture and faded colours felt decades out of date. The rooms were Spartan too: no air-conditioning, Wi-Fi that didn't work, cramped space, a tiny desk fixed to the wall and an old, small LCD TV mounted there as well. The bathroom was clean, but cramped and dated, with chipped, worn fittings and only the basics. Even though only a few of the 24 rooms seemed occupied, the walls were paper-thin and we could easily hear what was happening next door. It's cheap and can do for a single night if all you need is a bed. If you can stretch your budget and want a place that keeps you more comfortable, Montargis has newer, better-maintained options.
