Le Montclair Montmartre by River Hostel

The one thing I can’t fault is the location, which is convenient. The room, though, was dirty and smelly, and it was cold. There was hair all over the blankets, and both the floor and bathroom were dirty. For a room meant for four people, there weren’t enough hangers to use. I know the hotel is cheap, but I didn’t expect it to be this dirty. Of all the hotels I’ve stayed in, this was my worst experience. That’s my honest review, sorry to say.

No hot water at all during our four-day stay. Every day, they said someone would come “this morning” to repair the boiler, and it never seemed to happen. Another couple told us they’d gone a whole week without hot water. We also found old reviews from 2019 and 2021 mentioning the same problem. It’s a lot to pay over £100 a night for no hot water. The woman serving breakfast was washing dishes by hand without any hot water either. There were no shelves in the bedroom for our things, and the bunk bed ladder had only its bottom step, with the others missing, making it unsafe for my child. The whole place and its staff seemed dodgy, and I’m not sure who owns or runs it. Awful, don’t book there or you’ll waste your money.

My room had no hot water, extremely weak Wi-Fi, and wasn’t cleaned once during my stay. I checked out two days early, but the property refused to refund those unused nights. I contacted Booking.com, but they didn’t resolve the issue and gave me misleading information. I’ve filed a claim with the Tribunal de proximité, reported the property to the DGCCRF (Direction Générale de la Concurrence, de la Consommation et de la Répression des Fraudes), and plan to complain to the Médiateur du Tourisme et du Voyage. I’ve also opened a chargeback dispute with my bank. I have dated photos, videos, and written messages to support this. I don’t accept dishonesty or false advertising. The property failed to meet even basic service standards. Future guests should expect the hostel to reply in its defense, but shouldn’t believe it or fall for the trap. Read the other negative reviews and, if you have any common sense, find somewhere else to stay.

The location and price worked well for us. There’s a bus and metro station nearby, plus plenty of useful shops and a laundrette. Staff were kind and helpful, and our family rooms had fans, AC, and kettles. The room looked much better in the photos than it did in person. The building and stairs could use fresh paint and updating, but we were happy overall with the location and the price.
