The room rate is competitive for August, and the beds are comfortable. Hotel Roncevaux is right in the heart of Pau on Louis Barthou Street, where access is restricted. There are a few parking spaces in a shared courtyard. The reception is open 24/7, but the ground-floor room had a musty smell and the bathroom seemed short on technical maintenance. Breakfast felt overpriced for the very limited selection. In the morning, they were understaffed for both breakfast and checkout. The receptionist had to handle both, which caused delays, and the buffet sat empty until we reminded them several times to refill it.

The location right in the city centre was a real plus, and breakfast was OK. But the hotel feels old and worn. Our room was dirty when we arrived, unbearably hot, and had no ventilation. The bathroom only had hot water. They tried to charge us twice the amount, though that was sorted out easily. The road outside was closed, so there was nowhere to park. That can happen, but the hotel should have told us about another option. We drove around the centre several times before finding a suitable spot.

There’s just one exit from the upper floors, which is concerning. The hotel seems to be under construction and, in my view, should close until the work is finished. It felt more like a backpackers’ hostel. Breakfast was a letdown too: very little choice, and no French baguettes, which I’d expected.

Right in the centre, about 10 minutes from the main station. Perfect.

Quaint little hotel with really friendly staff and great value. The location’s perfect, so whenever I’m in Pau overnight, this is where I stay.
