The river view is enchanting, so ask for a room facing that way. The rooms were last renovated in the 1980s, but they’re clean and in good shape, and the building’s age shouldn’t put you off. Hotel de France is also about 100 metres from the thermal baths, an easy walk there and back. In a town with only two hotels, this is the one I’d pick. The proprietors have run it since the 1950s, which has helped it keep a solid reputation in France. We checked out the nearby restaurants and were disappointed to find both had chili con carne as their main course. If you want classic country French food, this is the best place to eat in town.

The staff were so kind and couldn’t do enough for us. Our room looked out onto a lovely little river, and I’d love to come back. We stayed here five years ago.
