Domaine Jean Sipp

The staff were really friendly, and spoke English well. A lovely tasting.

We’d visited Jean Sipp vinery several times before, but this time we decided to stay for two nights. We had Clos Ribeaupierre, the larger of the two rooms. It’s got a sitting area with huge armchairs, a little kitchen, and a separate bathroom and toilet. The bed was excellent, with a very warm duck feather blanket. There’s plenty of parking and an outdoor seating area. After 18.00 the winery gets very quiet, so we slept without being disturbed. The ladies there were helpful and kind, and sorted out our few questions quickly. I wish I could live there, or at least stay a few weeks every year.

We came to Jean Sipp for a wine tasting, not to stay at the Domaine. Even though they were extremely busy getting ready for the harvest, we got a warm welcome and a tour of the cellars and production areas. The wines were amazing, and our host was kind and knowledgeable. Jean Sipp was such a pleasant surprise in the Elzas. Be sure to visit.

We’d booked a free wine tasting two weeks ahead for me and two friends. When we showed up at the agreed time, the woman at the counter was unfriendly and said they didn’t do tastings at all. That was odd, given our confirmed booking and all the signs on the street advertising them. After I showed her the confirmation email, she said she needed to speak to her boss, but came straight back with a bottle instead. She then said the tasting would cost EUR 8 per person and began describing how they “usually” show one wine from each type. During the tasting, she barely spoke about the wines or the winery, just poured and left us there. We felt like our presence was a nuisance. The owner came in while we were tasting, looked at us, then left without even saying hello. We had no issue with paying, though the price could have been clearer. The whole experience felt ridiculous and insulting. We visited three other wineries during our two days in the area and enjoyed them all. Jean Sipp was the only one we’d rather forget.
