Hôtel Le Vieux Carré

For a real Rouen experience, this is a wonderfully quirky place in an old historic building with a charming courtyard. The rooms are small and old, but that's part of the appeal. Anyone after an anonymous chain hotel might not enjoy it, but I liked its humanity and variety. It's right in the heart of the old city, with the main sights easy to reach and some great restaurants nearby.

We stayed for one night and really enjoyed it. Our room was small and homely, but clean and comfortable for three of us. The host was kind and helpful, and it was easy to communicate in English. The location worked well for public parking, and guests get a discounted parking rate. We could walk to lots of restaurants and sights in downtown Rouen. The decor is quirky and eclectic in a fun way. If you're after a luxury chain hotel, this probably isn't for you, but for a clean bed and a charming setting, it's lovely.

I felt comfortable here, and the old building was utterly charming. There's a welcoming living room downstairs where you can sit and have tea. The location is right on a historic central walking route and not too far from the train station. Just be ready for the steep, narrow spiral stairs up to the rooms.

It's a beautiful city, and the hotel is in a great central spot. The building is old, with some restorative work underway, as the photos show. My bedroom was small but fine. The bathroom could use some work.
