La Colonie

We enjoyed our stay at La Colonie. The food was delightful, with local produce getting the spotlight, and we were in the smallest room, which was definitely tight. In return, we had the biggest bathroom, with a huge double shower and plenty of wash basin space. The old building has been repurposed and is crammed with antiques, memorabilia, and objet d’art. It’s eclectic, a little strange, and full of French art and art history books.

This family-run inn was a lovely break on our Via Podiensis walk through a truly spectacular, wild part of the country. The service was outstanding, and the rustic-chic furnishings made the place feel special. In the evening, the chef and owner, Cyril, prepared a family-style dinner using local ingredients and recipes. It’s a meal we won’t soon forget.

We spent five days at La Colonie with the family, and the warm welcome and beautiful surroundings made it a memorable escape. The rooms were cozy but spacious enough for us to unwind after exploring, and we had clean, fluffy towels every day. Hiking around Aubrac was spectacular, with trails through green meadows and over rugged plateaus. We also took the Laguiole knife tour, which gave us a fascinating look at the craft behind these iconic blades. Meals were generous and full of local Aubrac specialties. Breakfast set us up for the day, and dinner kept us lingering at the table. Champagne flowed generously as we toasted new friendships and starry nights. We met pilgrims walking the ancient paths, shared meals and laughs, and heard stories that added a spiritual dimension to the trip. La Colonie felt like a wonderful mix of family time, adventure, and relaxation, with breathtaking landscapes and heartfelt hospitality. We left with full hearts, new friends, and a wish to return. It was an enchanting trip we’ll treasure.

Cyril and Lizette are so welcoming, and you can feel how much they love La Colonie. Antiques and art fill the rooms, carefully collected and giving the place its own distinct charm. The setting is peaceful and unusual, with spectacular views from every room. Breakfast was generous and included plenty of local ingredients. A real countryside gem 😊
