La Maison Rouge - Backpacker Hostel

The staff were extremely helpful, and they made my second night in the city much better than my first. The accommodation is affordable and cosy, with plenty of room in the sleeping area to spread out, charge devices, and use the secure lockers for valuables. Just bring your own lock. There’s also a secure garage under the bunkhouse where I could lock up my bike. Washing facilities for yourself and your clothes are great. Breakfast is available for an extra 4 euros, and they also offer coffee and a games night, though you should check availability. What more could I want?

The place feels welcoming, and I liked both the shower and the bedroom style. There was a small problem when I arrived, so they should update their registration process. I only wish breakfast were a bit more generous.

I ended up not staying here. Check-in is only possible during four hours: 8:30-10:00 a.m. or 6:00-9:00 p.m. They never told me that my confirmed arrival time was outside those hours, so I was left on the street in a dangerous area. I’m giving two stars only because they refunded the two nights.

Ike and Anaelle’s 14-bed dormitory felt like a home away from home, and it’s centrally located. It was a welcoming, restful place. Ike respected my Go Green challenge, and each day I took buses and trams to reach the trailheads. There are long, beautiful forest trails up to the dams, or shorter walks to the charming village of Saint Victoire sur Loire, with great views of Loire. There’s lots to do, see, eat, and enjoy in Saint Etienne town centre. Go explore and enjoy! Colette. P.S. Remember to book Ike’s continental breakfast.
