A good place to break up the walk from St. Jean Pied de Port to Roncesvalles, with lovely views and comfortable accommodation. It costs a little more, but the staff are warm and welcoming. I’d recommend it.

The rooms were clean and practical. We arrived around 6pm after a late push on the Camino Francés and made it just in time for the shared evening meal. The dinner was nice, and being there with so many other pilgrims made for a great atmosphere.

We were in SJPP hoping to get a head start on the climb, and this place worked well for that. The rooms and food were fine, and the staff seemed to care. Other options were about the same price and already full, so if you haven't booked one of the more popular spots, this will do just fine. Communication can be tricky, but translator apps help. We had paid online, and the booking confirmations were printed out at reception, but the receptionist still told several of us we had no reservation. Using a voice translation app, we gathered that one of our triple rooms had been given to another family. We were made to take a double instead and pay the same amount. The owner yelled at us and slammed the desk, demanding payment again. When I tried to show her a French translation, she kept shouting that she didn't understand my English and threatened to throw us out into the mountains in 6-degree temperatures if we didn't pay again. It felt like robbery, and the people there acted like thugs. They seemed unable to handle the internet, devices, or their booking system. There was limited hot water, poor insulation, and we could hear people talking next door.
