The beachfront was noisy all the time, like a nightclub day and night, and there were a lot of intimidating people around. Saint-Pierre also didn't seem like the nicest base, so I was glad we'd spent a day in Cilaos. The sunset is the one good thing the area has going for it, and I wouldn't recommend staying here otherwise. I only had to put up with the hotel for two nights, thankfully. I'd booked because the listing mentioned a jacuzzi or spa. I checked in on Sunday at 2:30 pm, only to be told it was fully booked until Tuesday at 4 pm, the day I checked out. After leaving an outstanding 4* in Saline les Baines (Doudou Hotel), I expected something similar and was massively disappointed. The hotel may have been nice once, but it feels like it's going downhill. The staff at reception didn't seem genuinely friendly to me, apart from Nicholas. There isn't a phone in the room to call reception, and the restaurant seems permanently closed. At the bar, the only food was deep-fried 'snacks' and cold cuts or cheese. Manu at the bar was exceptionally friendly and helpful, though. On Sunday everything is closed, with few options. The TV is small and not smart, so I couldn't connect to Netflix. The tea and coffee in the room were awful, the AC was extremely loud, extra toilet paper was in the wardrobe instead of the toilet area, and there were no face cloths. The mattress and bed were uncomfortable too. I replied to the hotel's check-in questionnaire and asked about all of this, but they ignored it completely, maybe because I wrote in English. There's no point filling it out.

The bar and pool area is a nice place to unwind with a drink at sunset, and they make the best negroni cocktail you've ever had! The infinity-style pool is right next to the bar. The hotel sits on the promenade, within walking distance of lots of restaurants. Its decor is unusual but interesting and good, with a sort of "tropical-colonial" feel. Reception is very helpful and speaks good English.

The rooms are OK, and the hotel itself is very nice, with friendly staff. My main problem is the language barrier. Everything is in French, and nobody at the restaurant speaks English, which makes it hard for a tourist to get good service from the hotel. I'll see after my trip whether my experience changes.

We weren't happy with the cleaning. During our four-night honeymoon stay, the room was cleaned just once, and only after we asked. The hotel also told us the pool was closed only when we arrived, and offered nothing to make up for it. The spa is a jacuzzi and massage service, both paid, and you need a reservation. There aren't any English menus for the restaurant or bar either. The hotel itself is nice and close to the beach. Our room was spacious, breakfast was quite good, and they gave us a free welcome drink when we arrived.

The location is brilliant and the staff are good. Music outside can be annoying at night, but it didn't stop me sleeping, and apparently it's something local they can't help. The rooms feel worn and dated, and they're small for the price. They call it a four-star hotel, yet there isn't even a dental kit, shampoo, or conditioner in the room. I don't mind paying this much for hotels, but this one isn't worth it.
