We were cycling through southern France and stayed at Hotel Amandiere. The staff welcomed us with smiles and were so kind about our limited French. They explained how to use all the services without any trouble. The breakfast buffet was one of the best we've come across on our travels. We'd definitely stay again.
The bed sheet and blanket weren't to my taste because I don't like wool texture, and I thought they'd be hard to keep clean. I also couldn't adjust the heater temperature in my room. It's an old hotel with a Zen, Oriental feel, and it has free parking. The staff were friendly and spoke perfect English. Breakfast costs 15 euro and was decent. The door still uses a physical key.
I would give zero stars if I could. The room didn't look anything like the pictures, the floor felt dirty, and there was a pee smell around the bed. As soon as we ran the shower, a sewage smell spread through the room, and airing it out did nothing. There was mold in the shower corners, and the bed springs seemed broken. It was an awful stay. We'd paid in advance for 7 nights but left after just one, and the hotel refused to refund the rest, so we said goodbye to 700 euros. The manager also said they know some rooms smell bad. Unbelievable. STAY AWAY!!!
The breakfast alone made mornings something to look forward to: gorgeous croissants, hot chocolate made promptly, and servers who soon knew what we liked. A gentle old cat even came into the sunny dining room and sat by our feet. The whole place had a lot of charm. We also liked the quiet country B&B feel, the comfortable beds, and having our own terrace. The rooms may feel tight if, like us, you bring several big bags, but the bathroom was roomy, clean, and stocked with towels, with a built-in hairdryer. The open shower took some getting used to, though I still prefer it to a cramped American tub-shower setup. Our train from Paris to Avignon ran two and a half hours late because of a strike and maintenance problems. By the time we reached Avignon, we were worried about collecting the rental car before closing and arriving after dark. I emailed ahead, and the staff were understanding. They sent the gate and door codes and left our room key at reception with our name beside it. We were stressed when we arrived, but settled in and relaxed right away. The staff were polite, professional, and always smiling. They spoke excellent English and were patient while I tried out my beginner French. The location worked really well for getting around Saint-Rémy and the countryside. Boulevard Mirabeau, where Van Gogh painted “The Road Menders,” was about a five-minute drive, and “Les Antiques,” the Julii mausoleum and triumphal arch, and the Roman ruins of Glanum were only about five more. Saint Paul de Mausole asylum, where Van Gogh painted “The Starry Night” and other works during his stay, was a few minutes farther along. Parking was easy, and we woke refreshed each day, ready to explore. L’Amandiere gave us the southern French countryside stay we were hoping for. We were still figuring out the local midday break, but one day the hotel’s snack menu kept us going until dinner places reopened. The croque monsieur, thick split-pea soup, and charcuterie board were all delicious. We were there in the first week of March, outside the main tourist season, and still felt the staff gave us their full attention. We’ll remember Provence and our stay at L’Amandiere fondly. It was a highlight of our Saint-Rémy visit, and we’d happily return.
One of our favorite European stops in a long while. We came across this cozy little hideaway in July 2016. The rooms were simple, modern, and clean, with air conditioning, which is essential in July, and hair dryers. Breakfast was good, too. The staff were friendly and knew enough English to help when we needed it. There are some very good places to eat within a long walk or a short drive, and parking in town was easy. Our pick was A la Table de Nicolas, with great food, kind people, and a relaxed atmosphere.
