Hôtel De Bourgogne

I picked this place mainly because the restaurant had great reviews and I was looking forward to a flame-grilled steak. At 20.00 on Wednesday, the owner told me “c'est ferme” and stared until I left. Later, I passed by and saw tables full of people eating. Maybe there was a private party, or maybe he just didn't want to deal with a scruffy American. Either way, it left a bad impression. The room was small and stuffy, with one window and no AC, and the hallways were dark with low ceilings. The toilet was oddly close to the wall, awkward to use and perhaps impossible for a larger person. It was clean, and a little cheaper than nearby hotels, but that didn't make for a great experience.

You should book ahead. The three courses were all excellent, with local cooking at its best. A really enjoyable dinner, classic French food prepared with real style and packed with flavor.

There’s no elevator, so you need to be comfortable with stairs. The hotel is close to the town center, and although there’s no hotel parking, plenty of spaces were available on the street. Our room faced inward, away from the street, which made it quiet. The welcome from the owner and staff was warm. It’s a quiet, old-fashioned Logis de France hotel. The en suite bath and shower had lots of hot water and its own heating, though the glass partition was so small that it was hard to keep water off the floor. There were extra blankets, but just one pillow each would have been better with an extra, and the wardrobe had only one plastic hanger per person. Breakfast was a generous continental spread. We ate dinner there twice, enjoying the boeuf bourgignon, meat grilled over the open wood fire, and desserts like baba au rum and poached pears. Good quality for the price.
