Au Relais Saint-Éloi, Tours

Breakfast was decent, but the rest was really poor. The hotel is about a 15-minute walk from the centre, which is why we booked it for convenience. Our room was tiny, shabby, and run down. We'd paid for a superior room, but there was nothing superior about it except an extra bed reached by a wooden ladder. They should call these triple rooms, because superior is very misleading. Our relative had a regular double that looked just like ours, minus the ladder bed, so the extra charge wasn't worth it. The bathroom was in a shocking state, with things hanging off the walls, grimy stains all over the shower, which was barely big enough for an average-sized person, and a drain smell. The carpets were stained and grubby, and the bed was small and extremely uncomfortable. The pillows had nasty yellow stains on them under the cases. There were no smoke alarms in the rooms, which surely must be a fire safety breach. This felt more like a one-star hotel than a three-star one.

What a bargain. It's a 10-minute walk from the center, and the hotel is comfortable and very nice for a three-star place. Breakfast is good, with fresh bread, lovely cheese, fruit salad, and more. Before leaving the USA, I'd stayed at a similar hotel in Queens for two and a half times the price. The price difference makes no sense to me, but what do I know? I'd come back any time just for the cheese, fruit salad, and cafe au lait every morning.

We were five people on a motorbike trip and stayed one night. The hotel was easy to find, and the secure underground parking was great. It cost €9 per space, and we managed to fit two bikes in one. There's a bar on site with a good range of drinks. Breakfast had lots of pastries and cheeses, so there should be something for everyone. It's about a 15-minute stroll into the center, and easy to navigate in either direction.
