La Tour Du Roy

The staff are friendly if you ask for help, though they don’t offer much beyond that. Breakfast had been prepared the day before, and there was no buffet. The building looks fabulous and is in a good location, but the rooms feel old and overdue for renovation, even though they were clean.

The dinner was excellent, and the splendidly ornate dining room is still there. Breakfast, though, was rather sparse compared with other hotels we stayed in. We last visited La Tour du Roy about 25 years ago, when it was bright, cheerful, and ornate. Sadly, it now looks as if it hasn’t had much upkeep. We’d asked for a room with few stairs, but none in the main building were available, so we ended up in an outbuilding up a very long external wooden staircase. The room was spacious, but there was no WiFi, and the fridge clearly hadn’t been used or cleaned in years. The main disappointment came at payment: our demi-pension booking appeared on the bill at about 20% more than the separate prices for dinner, room, and breakfast, which were already quite pricey. When I pointed this out, they readily reduced the bill to the total of those individual costs. If you stay, I’d avoid the demi-pension rate. We won’t be coming back.

The food is fabulous, and it’s a quirky, old place with a very French feel. We had a huge room with two double beds, and it’s dog friendly. We’ve stayed here three times now.

It felt a little like stepping back in time. The service was fine, and the food was okay.
