Hotel Restaurant Kuentz

We booked a night here before flying home from Basel Airport. At €70, we chose the room with the four-poster bed. The receptionist spoke little English, but she was pleasant and helpful. I assume she was the manager’s wife, though I’m not sure. My partner wanted a bath, but there was no plug. The receptionist searched several rooms until she found one. The bath enamel was chipped, so it wasn’t comfortable to use. The bedside lights didn’t work either, so I had to turn on the main light in the middle of the night to get to the bathroom. Dinner took two and a half hours for three courses. We were seated on the balcony, and when the receptionist asked what we wanted for dessert, we pointed out that we hadn’t even been offered starters yet. The salad starter was a bowl of lettuce with dressing, a quarter of a tomato, bacon bits, and croutons, alongside stale bread. Pork chops were the only dish on that menu, but they had run out, so we were offered steak instead. It was very tough and chewy, with just a few potatoes, sliced cucumber, and chopped tomato. My partner refused to pay for hers. I asked for mine to be cooked again, but it came back with only extra cucumber and tomato. The Black Forest gateau, described to me as a regional specialty, was extremely dry, and the cream looked as if it had been sitting out for days. My partner liked her crème brûlée, though the serving was very small. We had planned to have breakfast, but cancelled after dinner. The receptionist said she understood. The manager, who I assume was the person in all the pictures around the place, didn’t acknowledge us, especially after we complained. He stayed on the terrace drinking with his friends while the receptionist handled everything. The restaurant had looked okay, but the dinner was awful. We checked out as early as we could and spent nearly four hours at the airport before our flight. I wouldn’t recommend this place. The food was awful, and apart from one person, nobody seemed to care.

We found the Kuentz Hotel quiet and good for relaxing during our weekend there. The staff were nice, and the restaurant was good. It was a great experience.

The food was good, and it worked well for an overnight stop.
