I’d been coming to this pub and restaurant for about six months, and until recently the food had always been first class and fairly priced. The last time before this visit was December 2025, when the menu and service were as good as usual. We came in at 5pm on Monday 26th January, and the new menu was a real letdown. I ordered my usual Black Lion Steak Burger, which used to be a treat made with quality, locally sourced steak mince. This one was dry, bland, overcooked mince shaped roughly into a burger, and started falling apart as soon as I picked it up. The server took it back after I explained the problem, then came back to say the menu had changed on the 1st of January, all burgers were now made in house, and that was just how it was. They no longer use steak mince, which seems a mistake for something costing £18. I asked for lasagne instead, only to be told they didn’t have any and it shouldn’t have been on the menu. So I chose Welsh rarebit with bacon added, for £12. That was disappointing too, just two small slices of sourdough with cheese sauce and bacon, and looked worth £6.00 at most. It’s a shame, but I won’t be back until the menu improves. The attitude needs attention too.

We were welcomed warmly and offered a cosy table by the fire in a corner. The pub has traditional decor and a large open fireplace, and sits in a lovely spot beside a pretty river and an attractive old bridge at the entrance to a small Welsh village. Our light lunch was nicely presented and delicious, followed by a drink and coffee. The Land Lady showed us one of the rooms, which looked lovely and comfortable. We’re hoping to return soon and stay overnight so we can explore the area.

We had a peaceful, cosy meal with my family on Boxing Day, and the atmosphere in the restaurant was nice. The food was a bit bland, though okay, and the service was good apart from the girl behind the counter, who was rude and dismissive. She said I owed more than I’d brought, and when I said the amount must be wrong, she just replied, “well it is”. The charge came out at double what I should have paid. I showed her the menu and what I ordered, and after checking it she could see I was right. She had an attitude and didn’t listen to customers. I don’t think she should be working with them.

Enya looked after us all evening, and the service was first class. The Black Lion is a lovely traditional pub, with a good choice of cask and stock beers. Everything we ordered was good quality and tasted great.

We had a delicious home cooked meal on New Years Day, and the service was brilliant. It’s a friendly, comfortable pub, definitely a lovely place to stop for food.
