We cut our break short because the place was so dirty and the curry smell wouldn’t go away, even after we tried odour eliminators. It was easily the dirtiest property we’ve had the misfortune to stay in, and we kept our clean clothes in the car. We told the booking agent on arrival. To their credit, they sent a contract cleaner to tackle some of the problems, but we agreed the smell might take a serious deep clean and redecorating throughout to resolve. The owners were ultimately responsible for leaving the property in such a dreadful state. It also felt tired and, in our opinion, badly in need of refurbishment. There were mouldy patches on the shower head and screen in the en-suite, and what came out of the shower drain once it was opened was something I couldn’t unsee. The main bathroom was in the same condition. The kitchen sink, counters, shelves and cupboards were unclean, and the dining table still had food residue and crumbs on it. The kitchen towel rail and radiator had a thick layer of dust that looked like it had built up over weeks or months. Crockery, cutlery and cooking utensils had been put away dirty. The towels supplied were seriously unclean and had to be replaced, the bed throw was very dirty, and all the surfaces were extremely dusty. I’ve added a few photos of areas of major concern, including the bathroom hygiene and kitchen. We couldn’t get our vehicle into the car port because the entrance is very narrow. On entering, there’s a steep, narrow staircase up to the bedrooms and bathrooms, then another flight to the living area. We’re still waiting for feedback from the owners through the Sykes Cottages booking agent.
