There was a roadworks crew outside overnight, making noise well past 3am. We weren't told before arrival, and barely slept. In the bar and restaurant, the lights flickered throughout our visit, so eating in the dark was difficult. Our meal cost £50.45 for two cans of pop at £2.50 each, two curries and one starter. The hygiene and upkeep were well below what you'd expect. The towels looked dirty, and there was mould around the bathroom windows, on the shower head, and on skirting boards and door frames. We found flies and dirt on the bed sheets, spiders on the walls and windows, and a leaking shower with loose doors that felt unsafe. The room also had scuffed and marked walls, white marks on the bed base, a loose carpet thread in the middle of the bedroom, and a rip in the bathroom lino. The floorboards were uneven and creaky, as were those through the rest of the hotel while navigating its maze of stairs. The mattress sagged in the middle. Two thin pillows stuffed into one case still felt solid to lie on. There was no fire escape map in the room. On arrival, guests were asked to write their names, vehicle registration and phone numbers on a publicly visible sheet. I believe that breaks GDPR and will report it. Also double-check the door lock when you leave. Twice, the key just spun in the barrel without locking the door, though thankfully we checked before going out. The receptionist made me uncomfortable with the smiling, winking and brushing her hair whenever I passed. When she spoke, she ignored my wife, looking at me and smiling instead. I'm married, and I didn't want that attention. Overall, the place seems short on maintenance, cleanliness and care for guests. Based on our stay, I wouldn't recommend it and won't be back.

The setting is beautiful, and the views were a real high point. The staff were another bright spot: Ibraheem and Sakina made us feel welcome, and another woman on the team was friendly and helpful too. The building itself feels worn and needs a substantial update. Our room was disappointing, with a cracked bathroom floor, a broken tile under the vinyl, scuffed walls and creaky floors. Around the hotel, the carpets looked dated and curtains were coming off their rails. Getting to our room was awkward as well, with stairs going up, down, then up again. I brought my husband as a treat and had hoped to bring my uncle sometime, but after this stay I wouldn't feel comfortable bringing him here. Similar concerns keep appearing in reviews, and I hope management acts on them. The hotel has a lot of potential in such a lovely location.

The food was excellent, and we noticed people who weren't staying at the hotel coming in just to try the Indian and Scottish dishes. They even made an extra sausage for my dog at breakfast. The room was good and had a bath, and the pool table worked fine, with no safety issue. I was wary after reading mixed reviews, but we found it great value in a stunning setting.

The damp smell in the bedrooms was awful, and the black mould raises a serious health concern. The rooms were clean, but that persistent dampness is why I'd rate the hotel only two stars. Anyone with asthma, bronchitis or COPD should keep away from Loch Long hotel. The reception, dining room and main entertainment room look as though they've been upgraded. The bedrooms, though, still feel like a health and safety risk.

Sakina greeted us when we arrived and was warm, professional and so pleasant that we felt at ease straight away. The atmosphere was relaxing, and we had a lovely stay at Loch Long Hotel. We'd happily give it five stars and recommend it to anyone visiting the area.
