The pool and other facilities were enjoyable, and the outdoor park is great for kids, though both could use some maintenance. A few hair dryers were broken, there were puddles on the floor, the drains weren’t very clean, and the park is showing wear. Aviemore is a fantastic place, but the resort seems to be relying on that while letting its standards slip. It doesn’t feel like a four star hotel, though better upkeep could make it much better. Our room at Macdonald Aviemore Resort was small, especially with a cot, and the shower was only lukewarm. The carpets were dirty and smelled unpleasant, and the lift had a strong smoke smell. The hotel itself feels tired and needs investment. We were woken at 7am by a fire alarm and had to leave our room with our baby and six-year-old. It stopped before we even got to the muster point. Later, we were casually told it had been triggered by someone showering with the bathroom door open. There’s a sign warning about “sensitive” alarms, so this doesn’t seem like an isolated issue. That’s not acceptable in a family hotel where sleep is already precious. We were a family of four. When we raised the alarm incident, reception first offered complimentary breakfast, then took the offer back after checking with a manager. That was handled poorly.

The location suited us well, and the kids loved the warm pool, slides and soft play. The playground was decent too, though a bit frozen at that time of year. Our room was a good size. The hotel is a little dated but decent overall, and the criticism we’d read about breakfast didn’t seem fair for what it costs. Dinner was a different story. The restaurants weren’t okay, and I’d strongly suggest eating elsewhere or picking something up from the shops. I’ve never had a worse burger, and the ribeye steak made me cry. The kids’ food was passable. At those prices I’d expect good food. Maybe the time of year affected things, but I doubt it. Service was good.

The complex was nice enough and my room was average. Breakfast was really poor, especially the porridge, which was disgusting and honestly inedible. Cereal and toast are okay if that’s all you want. I’ll go self-catering next time.

The location is great for Aviemore town, and the beds were comfortable and clean. The complex feels dated and could do with an upgrade. We paid £198 for one night with breakfast for three, and it wasn’t good enough for that price. Breakfast was an ordinary buffet. We’d booked Aspects restaurant, but after reading the reviews we ate elsewhere. The swimming pool, ice rink and play areas were okay.

We’re here with Gate 1 for two nights, and dinner tonight deserves a mention. I asked for vegetarian food and got four amazing courses. There would’ve been five, but I was so full I turned down dessert. I never get so stuffed that I feel ready to burst, but that’s how I feel now. Really pleased with dinner. Hats off to Chef.
