For a reasonably priced, no frills overnight stay in a good location, the pub is fine, but don't expect a warm welcome. We booked two rooms for two couples because we were attending a wedding nearby, after travelling more than 200 miles. I'd asked in advance whether we could check in a little earlier to get changed for the 3pm wedding. They couldn't guarantee it but said they'd try. When we arrived at 1.30pm, the rooms weren't ready. The woman on staff wasn't friendly or helpful and made no effort to fit us in, so we had to take turns getting ready in the public toilets. We got the keys at 2.20pm, along with information about ordering breakfast, but had no time to use the room facilities before leaving for the wedding five miles away. The rooms were basic and a bit tired, though clean, with comfortable beds, lovely bedding, fluffy towels, complimentary tea, coffee, biscuits and water, and a nice hot shower. When we returned at 10.30pm, the pub and bar were shut. The staff member hadn't told us the closing time, and as guests staying there we expected the bar to be open or at least some staff to be around. We didn't eat at the pub, and the lack of hospitality would have put us off anyway.

The bed was the best part, really comfortable, and I slept very well tucked in on a chilly night. The room had the basics but no extras, and the price seemed fair for it. There was no breakfast, which the rate reflects. The shower had very poor pressure, and the shower head seemed to need more pressure than the building could provide. The grout needs freshening up. Heating was absent or switched off, with just a tiny plug-in radiator that warmed my toes without any risk of burning them. The pub itself looks good, with a range of places to sit for a meal or evening with friends and family. There's a good sized garden at the back beside a sizeable car park, and child-friendly areas. The beer was okay and the pool table was fine too, just 50p a go, which was a bargain. I didn't eat there because the menu seemed overpriced for the basic choices. Service felt very flat, without a smile or any conversation. The woman showed me the room and handed over the key, then that was it. It takes a bit more effort to make someone want to stay again. The room rate is fair, though the room could use a few tweaks.

My wife and I had lunch at the Barford Inn yesterday, and the main course and puddings were a very pleasant surprise. Everything was well prepared and tasty, and the prices were very reasonable. I don't usually review places I've visited, but we'll be back.

At lunch, my well cooked beef burger arrived with a pink tinge. The beer, a kind I usually drink, tasted off too. I politely mentioned the metallic tang to the server, who seemed indifferent, though they did replace it with another brand.

Last Friday we stopped in for lunch and ordered the pork belly. It was gorgeously tender and the portion was large. We'd also had pork belly here as a Sunday roast a few weeks ago, and it was lovely then too.
