We had a great time and will recommend it to friends and family. The proprietor looked after us throughout, moving between check-in, bar service, meals and giving local guidance with a warm, larger-than-life personality. A great team supported him, and he seemed to be everywhere while keeping on top of things. Our room had a plush king bed, wingback chair and comfortable desk, with boutique decor that differs from room to room. The bathroom was huge, with a freestanding bath you could stretch out in, a powerful shower and all the toiletries, including conditioner, which so many hotels mistakenly think we can do without. The whole hotel has been renovated with an eye for detail, and it feels warm and welcoming. There are several fireplaces, though none were lit when we visited in early May. The bar has the tables and chairs you’d expect in a traditional pub or inn, along with a few lounge seating areas and a big rounded table for a group or family lunch. The dining room’s hand-painted-looking details were beautifully done; it’s large but still felt cosy.

Bella our dog was made very welcome, and we were grateful for the birthday drinks and friendly service. Dinner and breakfast in the dining room were really good, with a lovely locally sourced approach. On a cold night we got a warm welcome, and our room was warm, spotless and very comfortable, with lovely pillows and bedding. We enjoyed sitting on the sofa by the open fire. The next day we walked down to High Force, still as stunning as I remembered, then stopped at Raby Castle on the way home. We enjoyed the gardens, deer park and beautiful castle, and the complimentary tickets saved us £48. We had a late lunch at The vinery cafe before heading home. A very special 24 hours for a big birthday, thank you so much.

George deserves a special thanks for offering me a coat for the winter walk to high force and being genuinely nice throughout. The staff are a credit to the hotel. We had an outstanding, filling breakfast, and dinner was perfect, so compliments to the chefs and team. The bar was relaxed, with fires blazing. From the moment we arrived, we were treated like friends. Our cosy, beautiful room came with fresh mild for tea or coffee. We were told there was work going on at the other end of the hotel, but we never heard a thing. We’ve just returned from a one-night dinner BB stay at this gem. It’s perfection, and we’ll be back soon.

The Sunday roast was really good, with generous portions and good service. Staff were welcoming, the country decor was lovely and the place had a great vibe. It was my first visit, but Sunday meant there was only the roast menu, with no children’s menu. That was disappointing, and because we have a fussy eater who needs children’s options, we won’t come back as a family on a Sunday. Parking is paid too, which should definitely be free for paying customers.

After exploring the countryside around High Force, this was a lovely, cosy stop on our road trip through the North Pennines and Yorkshire Dales. The atmosphere was warm, the setting lovely, and the staff friendly. The food was fresh, full of flavour and delicious, especially the excellent Beef & Shiitake Mushroom Burger. Highly recommended!
