The kids are already asking to come back for a birthday next year, which says a lot. We had a lovely dinner in the library, where they enjoyed looking through the books. The servings were generous, and when pancakes weren’t available for the children’s puddings, the barman offered to make some. They looked great and the kids polished them off. Breakfast had a good range too. Our suite had plenty of room for two adults and two children, with a separate children’s sleeping room, an adjoining hallway, a bathroom and an extra toilet. The rooms are a bit dated, but that didn’t bother us. The pool was nice, and the man at reception there was friendly, helpful and full of useful information. We stayed at the start of January and couldn’t fault the visit. A deluxe suite with breakfast for under £100 is hard to find, so it felt like a great night away.

The water pressure was excellent and the water got really hot, much better than at some other hotels. The shower head was broken, though. The place feels old, with dated sockets, no way to charge beside the bed, and heating that runs on a timer. The SMART TV was a nice surprise. Mat was kind and really supportive that day. He helped me charge my phones, which I needed for travel and train access. Without his help, I would have struggled. Across from him, a woman called “M@'ce” wasn’t at reception and said she didn’t want to speak to me. People deserve to be treated kindly even if you don’t like their face.

The staff were really nice, and the bar was decent with reasonable prices. Breakfast was disappointing, though. Tables hadn’t been cleared and food wasn’t topped up during the busy period. Maybe it was just that way during our stay. There was some noise from upstairs, but that can happen in a hotel. The place is looking a little tired around the edges. I didn’t eat there or use the spa or pool. All in all, not too bad.

Breakfast was good, but the fried eggs ran out after we arrived at 8am and each had one. Later guests were left with scrambled eggs. The Nutella was in a large shared tub with what looked like bits from other people’s spoons, so I told my son he couldn’t have any. There’s plenty of parking, and the neighbouring park is lovely. It was a convenient base for us. K liked the cosy lobby and bar, though we only passed through. We spent two nights in two Ambassador rooms. The rooms were comfortable and spacious, and the stay was good in the end, but we were unsettled by the insects. Rooms 433 and 435 had Harlequin ladybirds crawling over the walls near the ceilings and windowsills. We moved across the hall to 430 and 432, where there were none. I was already on edge, then two enormous black moths appeared at night in room 432, apparently from the bathroom. This seemed worrying for the end of December. The TVs are perched awkwardly on cabinets just big enough for them, so they can slide off if touched. That’s concerning with children who may not think about safety or looking after things.

The food was awful, and the gym staff came across as almost ignorant. They didn’t greet me or look away from their computer screens. I stayed in room 204 on Thursday evening, 14th May 2026, then returned on Sunday, 17th May, to a supposedly similar “Luxury” Suite. The label didn’t match reality. Suite 204 was already shabby, with dirty, stained upholstery and carpets. Room 304 was an even bigger downgrade and just as scruffy. It had missing curtains, two bathroom plugs stuck in the blocked position, and a tiny desk for working. The bedsheet was heavily soiled and disgusting. I can provide photos of these issues. When I asked Reception to change the sheet, the response was blank and without empathy or any initiative. Bedroom Service was closed, and I don’t understand why a replacement sheet couldn’t be found from another room. An apology and a kinder manner would have helped, but neither was offered. I’ve made several requests and still haven’t received a response from Management about my complaint and total dissatisfaction. It feels like management is declining instead of maintaining quality and service.
