It's a pleasant pub in a quiet rural spot, with parking and a decent choice of ales and ciders. The bar also has the usual spirits and various wines, plus what seems to be the obligatory Hawkstone cider by the Orangutan at Diddly Squat. I didn't spot a specials board while looking around inside. The pub shares ideas for local walks and holds event evenings, which help hospitality businesses through hard times. The ploughman's lunch is an unusual setup: pick the basics from the menu, then pay extra for your choice of meat and other additions. Mine came on a wooden platter with a few thin celery sticks, six slices of ham, two dollops of butter, half a sliced apple, one piece of wheatmeal bread and a small pot of chutney. I had to ask for more bread because there was far more butter than one slice needed, but they brought it without any fuss. There was no tomato or onion, and for the price and the name it felt a bit sparse. There must be some very slim ploughmen about, I reckon.

The owners were lovely and did everything they could to make our stay special. It's a beautiful place with stunning rooms and a cracking carvery. I had a wonderful weekend at the half moon inn and would really recommend it to anyone after a countryside escape.

The chef Adrian was absolutely brilliant. Every evening he came out to check that the food had met our expectations, and it was really tasty. The rooms were clean and nice, and we had comfortable accommodation in a lovely little cottage. Everyone was very warm and friendly. I was very happy with my stay.

The mums each got a little shortbread gift, a lovely surprise. Service was friendly and attentive, and all the desserts were homemade and delicious. For Mother's Day Sunday lunch, we had beef and lamb roasts with fresh, well-cooked vegetables, Yorkshire puddings and lots of gravy. A fabulous meal.

We felt really unwelcome when we arrived late because of the driving conditions. They planned to turn our table around, though no one had mentioned when we booked that they needed it back. The food has gone downhill along with the service, so I don't feel bad about not wanting to return.
