The orange juice at breakfast was nice, and the reception staff seemed pleasant. Beyond that, the place is run down, with no proper upkeep and very dated rooms that reminded me of my first bedsit. The lift doesn’t work. Breakfast ended at 9am on a bank holiday, with checkout at 10am, which seemed very early.

The beds were clean enough, but the hotel definitely needs upgrading. Breakfast was the only edible meal; dinner was terrible. The lift broke down on Saturday morning and wasn’t due to be fixed until Monday, which was difficult with my mobility issues because I had to use two or three flights of stairs. They offered to move me to another hotel, which I appreciated, but my group of nine was staying at the original hotel. The staff were very nice and helpful.

The staff were the highlight: reception was brilliant, check-in was easy, the conversation and banter were just right, and everyone was friendly. Our room was really clean, huge, and a great size for a family of four, with a massive TV. The kids loved it, and the price was great. There are some issues: the location isn’t great for shops, though the hotel can’t change that because it’s a listed building with nothing either side. The food was only good enough for £12, and the coffee was terrible, from a machine as old as God’s dog. The bar felt like God’s waiting room, and there were no vending machines for late-night chocolate and crisps, which this fat lad missed. The room had a few issues but was fine overall. It’s not the Ritz, but it’s bloody good value, and it looks like money is now being spent on the hotel from the top. Keep an open mind. I’ll come again wearing the hoodie my son got for me. Thanks ever so much!

The building’s architecture and atmosphere are lovely, with the lobby and dining room taking you back to the 30s and the corridors to the 60s. We came in February for a romantic weekend, and the friendly receptionist checked us in quickly and explained where breakfast and dinner were served. The room was exceptionally clean and had the amenities we expected, including a Jacuzzi bath. It was cold at first, but there was an extra oil heater. The main light didn’t work, though the staff’s friendliness and helpfulness made up for it. Breakfast was like a Premier Inn breakfast and couldn’t be faulted. Dinner was buffet style, and the receptionist made sure there was something I could eat as a vegan. There’s a small lift for four people to all floors except the fourth. Given the building’s age, the small lift is understandable. It was replaced by Otis in the 60s and modernised by EA Foulds in December 2025.

The upgrades are making the place look really nice, and the food was amazing as always. We’ve just got back from another great two night stay. All the staff were so friendly and helpful, and the sunshine was a bonus. Thanks, and see you again soon.
