Housekeeping seems to follow the idea that if you leave things long enough, they'll become vintage. I left feeling dirtier than when I arrived and didn't dare use the shower. The bedroom had a leaking ceiling dripping straight onto the bed, plus a patch of mould on the wall. The shower looked like a horror-film set, with more black mould, peeling silicone, and corners that seemed to have a thriving ecosystem. Damp bedding, toxic fungi, and a bathroom straight out of The Last of Us, all at the Avari Hotel. Five stars if you're a mushroom. Come for the mould, stay for the spores.

Checked in and found the hotel bar closed or out of order. The room door lock seemed dodgy, and inside I was gobsmacked that the place was allowed to open. There were holes in the walls, the furniture was falling apart, and the room was untidy and very unhygienic. The bedding was thin and hard, with stains, and the bed was very uncomfortable. The TV didn't work. The bathroom was absolutely disgusting, and the ceiling had damp stains and looked grubby. The bedroom felt unsafe.

Water was even dripping onto the plug socket when we woke up. The ceiling had damp patches, and behind the bed we found mould on the wall, dirty socks and sweet wrappers on the floor. The room also smelled strongly of cigarette smoke, though we don't smoke. It's a very dated, dirty place. The bar wasn't operating, but we were told we could bring our own beer. When we raised the problems, the owners didn't seem bothered, as if they already knew. A complete shambles.

The parking arrangement was frustrating. I found a space on arrival, then the manager said it was reserved for a guest who'd paid for it. Fair enough, but nobody had offered me that option or I would've paid too. The room itself was a disgrace: dirty, with a white mark on the TV, pink slime by the window, stained blinds that looked badly hacked at, and no lampshade. The shower stand was broken, so I had to hold the shower, and the water only got hot after the boiler tripped. The website photos are fake. I won't stay at this B&B again. Good luck to anyone who does.

It's in an alright spot near the beach, and the staff were really lovely. But our room was filthy, with odd stains all over it that I didn't want to identify. The bathroom door had no handle, and the floor itself seemed ready to give way.
