We felt uncomfortable in the house, even though the decor was very high quality, and left the next morning. The rules for a supposedly dog-friendly cottage felt unusually restrictive. The owner said the enclosed garden could only be used for exercise, but anyone with a dog needs to let them out first thing in the morning and last thing at night to do their business. We would, of course, have cleaned up after them. We also weren’t allowed to leave the dogs alone. We had an anniversary meal booked that would have meant leaving them for a couple of hours at most, which they’re fine with. We’ve stayed in plenty of dog-friendly cottages around West Bay and Bridport over the years, but we’ll choose more accommodating owners from now on.

There are plenty of bedrooms and bathrooms for everyone, so it works well for family and friends staying together. It’s a big, lovely modern cottage, with a cosy living room and a great kitchen for cooking and sharing meals.

A cream tea was waiting for us when we arrived, and it was delicious. The owners were friendly and helpful, and the house was spotless and very well equipped. Just right for a family get-together.

I found this place after Googling my ancestors’ home and would love to learn more about its history. Was it once 111 Hyde cottages, Bothenhampton/Bridport? Or were those cottages knocked down and rebuilt? The original property would have been home to two adults and eight children.

The area is absolutely lovely, and the hosts made us feel so welcome. We had an amazing stay. You can’t leave this out of your Mayo itinerary.
