Avon Gorge by Hotel du Vin

The view of the bridge was incredible, parking was easy, and we found a street spot about a 30-second walk away, perhaps because it was mid-week. Lunch was enjoyable too. I had the Prawn Cocktail, Lamb Shoulder, then pastry and cheese for dessert. The lamb was tender and full of flavour, probably the best I've had, though I don't know lamb very well. The gravy and mash were really good as well, but the greens were too salty for my taste. The atmosphere was pleasant, with lounge music I liked. Service was relaxed, and our drinks order wasn't right at first: we asked for a non-alcoholic cocktail and got one with alcohol.

The bathroom shower controls were a bit of a nightmare, and the place looks like it could do with a refurb. That shouldn't put you off, though. I had a lovely stay and the staff were excellent. It's an easy walk to Clifton village, the bridge and the Downs.

The room was cold and the curtains were filthy, frankly fit for the bin. I paid for a gorge view but got room 126 with no view. At reception, the person who greeted me was so unfriendly I thought they should change jobs. The bar staff were friendly, but the bar was freezing and everyone sat in coats waiting for 3pm because we were all told there was no early check-in. I stayed for Valentine's after the prices came down. I'd have been devastated if I'd paid more. The bed and bathroom were okay, but this was probably the worst one in the chain. The hotel felt grubby and needs friendlier staff. I called head office and they weren't interested, just told me to email. I won't stay here again. Be warned if you're booking.

The location was lovely, but parking was quite difficult. Our room was comfortable and the service adequate. Breakfast seemed expensive for what was offered, especially compared with the basic options available in Clifton. It felt like keeping costs down mattered more than giving guests a memorable experience.
