The Battleaxes

We booked a birthday dinner, but ended up waiting two hours for food in an empty pub. When it came, my medium-rare steak was well done and, frankly, pretty disgusting. We were taken to the restaurant side, where we were the only people there. Nobody asked if we wanted drinks, so we had to keep going to the bar. Not one glass was cleared while we waited, and we never got an apology for the delay. To give them credit, they cut the bill by 50% after we complained. But it's now midnight, and since 1pm all I've eaten is a handful of cooked chips, eaten in anger. Never again.

Google Maps led us to a fantastic find. Come here for the food, you won't be disappointed.

The chips were the highlight for me, proper triple-cooked ones with real flavour, not those cheap frozen catering-lorry things that have barely seen a fryer. If more pubs served chips like that, I'd eat out more often! The sauce on my lovely rib eye steak was great too. We're here for a couple of nights and I can't fault the visit. The staff are all polite and friendly. This morning a young woman arrived in the car park for her shift and called out, "Good Morning" to me. I can't remember ever being that smiley on my way to work. Our room is really nice with a lovely view, and the shower's nice too. If we need a hotel in Somerset again, we know where we'll stay. Management, your staff are a credit to you!
