Green Dragon, Welton by Marston's Inns

We booked and pre-ordered meals for 14 people over Christmas. The table was beautifully decorated for the season, and water was already there when we sat down. Our food arrived within 25 minutes, hot and fresh. The pies and gravy were amazing, the vegetables cooked well, and everything was tasty. No orders were wrong, and communication was great. Leanne and her team were friendly, attentive and excellent. We never had to wait for drinks or service. Very happy customers, and we're not easily pleased. We'll be back! x

We managed to get a table for two as walk-ins. The village pub felt really warm and welcoming, and the staff were very polite. The Sunday dinner was delicious, and both the apple and cherry crumble and the cheesecake were great.

We waited ages despite the pub being nearly empty. I had to ask about the missing bacon and for more “avocado”, and both eventually arrived after the rest of breakfast had gone completely cold. The bacon hadn't been included at all, while the “avocado” was clearly shop-bought guacamole, spread so thinly it looked wiped off and used on somebody else's toast. The bread barely seemed to have met the toaster, and the poached egg was still in its slightly snotty phase. I ordered avocado on toast with poached egg and bacon, and what came out felt like a low-budget chef's tribute to it. A laughable, awful breakfast. We raised the problems with the waitress while we were there, which is why the missing bacon and extra avocado eventually came. No refund or fix was offered at the time; otherwise we'd have gladly discussed it before leaving. I appreciate the offer now that my review is posted, but it should have been dealt with when we first raised it. An impressively poor performance from start to finish. Don't bother.

After a walk around Welton waters, I stopped at the Green Dragon for a sandwich and a drink. The steak sandwich sounded lovely, but it came in a large baguette with just one slice of steak in each half. I was extremely disappointed. That tiny amount of steak made it feel like I was paying for bread and the DNA of a cow.
