The Red Lion

Breakfast was a real highlight, with plenty of hot and cold choices, generous portions and tasty, well-presented cooked dishes. I also slept brilliantly in the comfortable bed after busy days. The room was clean, quiet and well equipped, and the pub-hotel atmosphere felt cosy and welcoming, with a bit of character you don’t get from bigger chains. The team at The Red Lion were warm and professional every time, quick with useful recommendations and clearly keen to make guests comfortable. I felt looked after from the moment I arrived. I’d recommend The Red Lion for a comfortable stay with friendly service and good food, and I’ll be back next time I’m in the area.

The Red Lion is well worth a visit in Hawkshaw, a lovely rural village on the edge of the West Pennine moors. Two of us had dinner there recently, and both the meals and desserts were tasty and nicely presented. The pub and restaurant were about half full, with a pleasant atmosphere. Everywhere looked clean and tidy, and the staff were attentive and efficient. They also offer a good-value fixed-price menu of two or three courses Monday to Friday.

The food was good quality, nicely cooked and served in generous portions, so it was excellent value. Staff at the red line were exceptional, always pleasant and helpful, and nothing seemed too much trouble. We enjoyed two nights at the Red Lion. Our room was spacious and very clean; we had to adjust the heating ourselves, but it worked well afterwards. The bathroom was clean and good, though it needed a wider shelf for a toiletries bag. We’d certainly stay here again if we returned to the area.

The staff made us feel very welcome and were flexible when we were delayed. Kelly and Dave were especially attentive, friendly and helpful, and went the extra mile to make sure things were right for us. The food was delicious, full of flavour, carefully prepared with quality ingredients and beautifully presented. A fantastic restaurant experience.
