The pizza we had two days earlier was amazing, but the restaurant meal was a real letdown. My lobster was swimming in butter, which ruined it. When I asked for a fresh plate to move the lobster and salad onto, I was treated as if I were crazy. I’d seen another customer with the same dish, and theirs wasn’t swimming in butter, so I mentioned it politely to the staff. There was no apology, and the response was extremely poor. The service was mediocre at best, yet the discretionary service charge was much more than I’d have tipped. It’s no wonder the service was so poor if the staff get their tips either way. I was very disappointed, and my stomach isn’t happy after eating a plate of ghee.

Steve and Sue were so attentive, from offering a great gluten-free menu to making me a pie to eat cold on the train home. The pub is family-run, comfortable and clean, and the room was spacious. I’d also recommend spending an evening in the bar chatting with the brilliant locals. One person said, “Oh, I’m not from round here, I’m from Calstock [2 miles away]!”

For £39, plus £7-50 each for breakfast, you get a very friendly welcome, good pub food, comfortable beds and a lovely full English breakfast. You’re not expecting the Ritz at that price, and I’d definitely stay again.

The owner was very hospitable, and the breakfast was excellent. It’s a family-run hotel and bar with good bedrooms, including a family room. I’ll stay again when I visit my relatives in the village.

We had a really good time at the village Christmas lights switch-on. It’s a fantastic village pub, with a great atmosphere and great staff.
