The room had clean towels and bedding, tea and coffee facilities, and a usable en-suite, though it wasn’t the cleanest. It was basic but functional. The check-in staff were very welcoming and took time to explain things, and ML Lodge is well placed for exploring Cardiff. The landmarks and places of interest are an easy walk away. The rest of the room was in rough shape. There were visible carpet stains, damaged paintwork and a damaged linen cupboard door. The furniture was worn, with large bits of veneer missing, and I could feel the bed base through the mattress. The chair looked dirty and had threads hanging underneath. The stair carpet was torn and threadbare, a possible trip hazard, and there were broken windows boarded up in the stairwell. The automatic lights only came on halfway up the first flight, which made the stairs tricky even at 3 in the afternoon and not ideal at night. We’d booked through Buy a Gift using vouchers for a “Charming 2 Night Stay,” and it wasn’t charming. After dropping our bags and spending the afternoon out in Cardiff, my Partner and I decided not to stay. Luckily, we arranged to stay with nearby relatives and still had an enjoyable couple of days in the city. I don’t think ML Lodge is entirely to blame. The place is what it is, a basic room for a cheap stay. If you know what to expect and aren’t looking for a hotel type experience, it might be good value as a base for 1 or 2 nights. Buy a Gift should take some responsibility for making sure the accommodation on its voucher schemes is suitable and as advertised. If something is sold as charming, I expect charming. I’ll raise the issue separately with Buy a Gift.

The staff were lovely and helped us check in early, so we didn’t have to store our bags. The owner warned us about the stairs to the top floor and apologised that there was no lift. They were steep and narrow, with slippery, badly worn carpet that seemed to get worse on each flight. Carrying suitcases up felt dangerous, and the handrails on one side were wobbly. We understood the building was old and that its layout couldn’t be helped, but the stairs were still a problem. Our room was dated, with peeling paint, a little mould on the curtains and bathroom ceiling, and carpet over flimsy floorboards with small holes. The bathroom floor dipped and felt squishy in the middle near the drain. On the good side, the beds were clean and comfortable, most of the bathroom facilities were fine, and the towels and toiletries were provided. There were problems with the heating and hot water, but staff fixed them quickly and gave us extra heaters in case the main one stopped working. Even with those, it was still quite cold. We booked at the last minute after our previous accommodation turned out to be unsuitable. The service was good, but we wouldn’t have been so happy if we’d stayed longer. Don’t drink the tap water, I did and got quite sick. For a short trip, you get what you pay for. The gyros shop is quite nice too.

It’s a very quiet, convenient spot near the shops and cafés, and having a restaurant downstairs was a bonus. The stairs were a bit annoying and there’s no elevator, but getting to the room wasn’t too bad. The room was nice enough for two days, with comfortable beds, an en-suite, heating, a TV, and towels. We booked at the last minute and found it fairly decent. Would recommend.

Our hen party arrived to find the rooms weren’t ready, and the owner wanted us to leave our belongings in the kebab shop. We’d booked five rooms but were given four, so it took ages to sort out a fifth. The room was filthy, stank of cigarettes and damp, and had no hot water. There was damp and mould on the walls, and smashed windows covered with wood or silicone, which didn’t feel safe. The stairs were deadly, and there was no lift. If I could give zero stars, I would. Honestly, this hotel is horrendous. Don’t stay here.

The stairs are dangerous, and the room was filthy. There were holes in the bathroom walls, the shower door wouldn’t close, and the built-in wardrobe had no door. The walls were grimy and looked like they hadn’t had a lick of paint in about 10 years. The windows were dirty and the curtains disgusting. They served out-of-date milk for tea and coffee. We checked in through the takeaway, though at least the food was good at the end of the night. I paid £86 for the most disgusting room and hotel I’ve ever stayed in. Before I’d even taken my coat off, I was checking for bed bugs. Whoever rated this a 3 star hotel needs their head checking. Do NOT stay here. I wouldn’t give it zero stars.
