You can see why people visit Castle Cary for this little landmark, whether or not they're getting married. The Round House is said to be licensed for weddings and to be Britain's smallest wedding venue. The plaque explains it was built in 1779 by Mr W M Clark for £23 from local charities, as a temporary lock-up. It's 7ft across and 10ft high, with two iron ventilation grills. After repairs funded by a 1/- subscription in 1894, Sir Henry Hoare Bart JP gave it to the Parish Council in 1922. One of only four such buildings in the country, it's an interesting monument and another reason to see this historic Somerset town.

You can get the key from the hall across the road and open it up to have a look. This interesting historic building was used as a jail in the 1700's.

There's parking around the area, so take care when you're visiting. The Round House sits in the centre of Castle Cary and has an interesting history. Another review has the writing that explains it all.

Would be even better if there were pictures of the inside. Still, this roundhouse is quite interesting historically.

Fascinating little place, an old temporary prison!
