The room was clean, though small, and we stayed for one night for my birthday. It was in a cottage out in the courtyard, so it didn't feel much like a hotel stay. The spa was the main reason we booked, but it was crowded and loud, with too few chairs to sit down, so there was no chance to relax. We ate at a nearby Indian restaurant the hotel recommended, and I wouldn't recommend it either. The hotel was okay overall, but it takes about 15 minutes to walk from the property to the road, which wasn't a great location for us. At that price, I wouldn't return. I suppose places like this charge partly for the name.
We had a spacious room overlooking the lake, and it felt like good value. The rooms were lovely, breakfast was fantastic, and the reception and bar staff were so helpful. I arrived before check-in and was allowed to use the spa, where towels were provided and the changing rooms were clean. A mother-and-baby class ran for several hours, but it barely got in the way. Lunch at the trophy bar was pleasant too. The staff were nice and the area was very clean. My Poke Bowl tasted good, though it had a lot of crispy onions and edamame still in their shells, which made the beans messy to dig out. It was a salad bowl without rice, a nice change from usual bar food, but £20 felt pricey for a bar-menu salad.
The beautiful building and setting made a lovely first impression, and David greeted us warmly with complimentary bubbles. The reception team were welcoming too, but gave us the wrong dinner menus for the Valentine’s special. After sitting down, we had an awkward change of plan and left for the bar restaurant instead. Dinner there cost the stay a star. We waited 40 minutes, then the order arrived wrong. Other tables were given complimentary drinks, while we felt overlooked. The TVs also take away from the old charm of the restaurant. In the evening, having the fire lit would be a nice touch, and more refreshments and professionalism from staff could make this a five-star stay. There was free access to an outstanding gym, plus an okay pool and sauna. The pool area could use more regular cleaning. Breakfast was good, and the manager there was brilliant, personally welcoming everyone.
The building is huge and we got lost a couple of times, which added to the adventure. It could use a little updating here and there, but nothing major. We made use of the free gym and swimming pool, and there are lovely views and walks around the area. I'd like to come back in summer. We had a disturbance on our first night and were refunded for that night. Thanks again to the head of house for sorting it out. I think the gentleman's name was David. The head of house also gave us an excellent welcome. The rooms were clean and tidy, breakfast was amazing and the restaurant was way above par. It was a lovely little getaway, and we'd definitely return.
The old building looks beautiful when you arrive, and the staff were friendly, but the place and its rooms feel tired. Our first evening, the app let us order room service, but after 45 minutes the order disappeared even though we'd paid. We had to go downstairs to collect it, so it wasn't really room service. When we asked about getting the charge back, reception sent us to the restaurant, and reception had first told us no. Our double bed had a single duvet. We didn't want to spend a day dealing with problems on what was meant to be a stress-free weekend. They apologized and changed the duvet when we raised it, but all the apologies didn't undo the experience. The food was average, and staff seemed unsure of their own refund process. I can see potential here, but I wouldn't recommend it or rate it four stars. Two stars at best.
