The City Hotel Chester

We spent two nights at the city hotel for my partner's birthday weekend, and the room was wonderful. Room 6 had a freestanding bath and thoughtful extras like coffee pods, tea, fresh milk, shower gel, shampoo and bath salts. It was nicely laid out, with a very comfortable bed and soft furnishings that made it feel both homely and luxurious. Even before we arrived, Sophie was texting to check if we needed anything and let us know the room was ready. She stayed just a text away if we had questions, brought our welcome drinks, and made sure we had extra towels and toiletries on the second day. I'd HIGHLY recommend the city hotel Chester for a weekend away. I can't thank Sophie enough for looking after us so well.

The fire alarm went off during last night's heavy rain at 11pm, apparently because water had come in through the roof. Everyone left their rooms and waited downstairs, but the out-of-hours emergency number redirected us to the empty reception. The fire service didn't arrive until nearly 1am. We heard from them that this wasn't their first call to The City Hotel and that it was an ongoing problem. Three tenants had to leave because their rooms had new water features. Back in our room at 2:00 am, we saw ceiling water damage, and the alarms kept sounding randomly through the night. The cereal promised with the booking was missing. I was absolutely livid. Leaving was the best part of this stay. There were serious issues with the building and the business. The reception was just a closed laptop behind an empty bar, with no staff on site after 5:00 pm. In the reception and bar area, warped, broken wooden flooring was covered with a rug. We nearly fell over it, and it felt like a potential death trap. Maybe the rug was meant as a temporary fix before essential repairs, but who knows? Shocking, disastrous and farcical all describe this house of horror. The City Hotel comes close to giving the impression of a full-on scam. If you don't sleep and have gills, I suppose this is the place for you.

The room was comfortable and well equipped, with a great bed, large TV, nice bath and shower, and a small kitchen area with a microwave oven and fridge freezer. They'd left fresh milk, a large bottle of water and cereal as well. Getting in was straightforward with the instructions for the lock boxes and room fobs. We even added a third night without any trouble. There was a little noise from trains passing because the room was right beside the line, but it wasn't too loud. I had an excellent stay at the City Hotel Chester, would recommend it and will be back.

That bath was heaven. My husband and I stayed here for our minimoon this week and loved the room. It looked stunning, with amazing little details, even the light switches. We also liked the small Bluetooth radio since we enjoy putting on music while getting ready. The staff were so lovely. We arrived to rose petals, complimentary gin and beer, and the hotel made sure everything felt special. It's in a lovely spot, about a 30 minute flat walk to the centre. There are plenty of taxis if you'd rather not walk, and a bus stop just outside the apartments. Thank you for a lovely few days. We can't wait to return and would absolutely recommend it.
