The George Hotel

We really like being able to bring my dog, and those comfy chairs and bar stools are part of the appeal. The bar was packed last night, but the team worked hard and kept everyone happy. Carl and Charlotte are always so welcoming, attentive, thoughtful and respectful, and the staff were fabulous and efficient. Thanks for a lovely evening at The George. We'll be back.

The evening meal was excellent, and the full English breakfast was just as delicious. Our bedroom was nicely decorated and had all the amenities to a satisfactory standard, though the hotel is still refurbishing its bedrooms. Staff were extremely professional and helpful. We had a fabulous one-night stay at The George Hotel in Chollerford, in a beautiful spot where the bar and restaurant look out over the river and gardens. I'd definitely recommend it and look forward to returning in spring for those gorgeous views.

The included breakfast had a good choice, and the river setting is beautiful. The location is absolutely ideal, and they are making a real effort to revamp this ageing hotel, which is built like a rabbit warren. There were no swimming facilities during our stay because they were being renovated. My main complaint is how expensive the food and drinks are. I ordered vegetable Wellington with mash and green beans, but it was a flavourless root vegetable pasty that seemed microwaved. It wasn't even hot, and there was a skin on the mash, so who knows how long it had been waiting to be served. It made me long for Greggs. I'd stay again, but skip the evening meal.

The staff were lovely, but the room really disappointed us. We chose the George Hotel as a birthday treat after I'd had a horrendous six months health-wise. I know not everyone can get a river view, but ours looked out onto mud, a derelict greenhouse and a pile of rubbish. It was too much, and really spoiled the time we wanted to spend in the room enjoying the view.
