The Cricketers

The housekeeping team quickly found the coat I’d left in the wardrobe and handed it in. When I called to sort out postage, the front-of-house team offered to send it back for free, which I’m incredibly grateful for. I’m so glad to have my coat back. We had an enjoyable one-night stay at The Cricketers, and the breakfast was excellent. I’d highly recommend it.

Breakfast was superb, from the brown toast to the quality ingredients in the full English, and the lady on duty was very friendly. We slept well in a really comfy bed, with no road noise. The room, Rose Bowl, was very clean, with tea and coffee provided. We checked in around 4, and although the pub was busy, we were shown across the car park to our courtyard room. Dinner was a mixed bag. The girls serving us were welcoming and smiley, though the older gentleman who seemed to be in charge looked thunderous all evening. Maybe he was having a bad day. My Scotch egg with piccalilli was fine: the sausage meat could have cooked a bit longer, but the egg was nice and runny. The butternut squash Dahl was delicious. My husband really enjoyed his chicken terrine and then the cod bean stew. We had no room for dessert. We booked for Valentine's day because it was a free weekend and we wanted to explore this part of the country.

We loved our Friday date night at The Cricketers. The beef shin pie was spot on, and the service was great, with really friendly staff. Live music added a brilliant atmosphere without taking over the meal. It’s a classic country pub, and the very low ceilings add to its charm. Just mind your head if you’re over 6ft. We’re already planning another visit.

We always look forward to coming here for a relaxing night away. The atmosphere suits a couples’ getaway, and the food is consistently excellent. The staff are great too. It’s a lovely local escape, and it never disappoints.
