We spent nearly £1,000 for a weekend away as a group of ten, hoping to enjoy ourselves. Instead, we left upset and uncomfortable, feeling unwelcome. The host was rude and unprofessional throughout, and the whole stay felt tense. We couldn’t properly relax. On our first night, we played some music while chatting. We accept it might have been a little loud at one point, but it wasn’t anything extreme or unreasonable. The host called and sent several messages demanding that we turn it off immediately. We stopped, but the tone was harsh and made us feel as if we’d done something terribly wrong just by enjoying our holiday. Around 11 the next morning, the host came over, banged loudly on our door and threatened to tear the speaker apart if we played music again. That was intimidating and unpleasant for everyone. Later that day, the host made a sarcastic remark along the lines of “I hope you won’t play music at night again,” in a very rude tone. We felt even more disrespected. We can’t be certain, but it also felt like we might have been treated differently because we’re Asian guests. The way we were spoken to gave us that impression. Either way, no guests should be treated like this. The accommodation itself may look fine, but the rudeness, poor communication and lack of respect ruined our experience. We absolutely wouldn’t return or recommend it to anyone looking for a comfortable, friendly stay.

The house itself was fine, but the welcome wasn’t very enthusiastic. The houses are close together and don’t feel independent, so there’s little privacy or comfort. We couldn’t listen to music while grilling in the garden, and it was considered too noisy indoors too. I had a pretty bad stay here.

We’ve already booked another stay at Thorntrees. It was perfect for our family, from BBQs in the private garden to a large roast dinner around the beautiful oak dining table, then a big glass of wine by the log burner. Everyone loved the warm, homely feel, the spacious layout and the bedrooms, most of which have their own ensuite. The cleanliness was second to none. The private, gated, off-road stone car park easily held our four cars. The location worked brilliantly for us, especially as the Coast to Coast path passes right by the front door, so we could walk the first section from St bees. We’d been looking for a large family break on the lesser-known western side of the lakes. Over seven years, we’d stayed at plenty of places around the lakes, usually decent and occasionally hidden gems, but often we’d been a little disappointed by snug, well-photographed properties with limited parking and slipping cleanliness standards. Thorntrees was a lovely change. I found it through the reviews and photos, then decided to book. We enjoyed every part of the stay.

There was room for all three generations of our family of nine during our wonderful week here last month, without us getting on top of each other. The garden views are breathtaking, and the village is lovely, with a nice walk down by the river. The kitchen was stocked with everything we needed for self-catering. We also made good use of the cosy lounge for evenings together, and the smart TV and good internet were a bonus. There were plenty of games and books too, so everyone had something to enjoy. I’d definitely recommend Sto to anyone considering this property for a holiday.

We spent a week at Thorntrees with the whole family, and it felt like home. There was everything we needed in the kitchen, bedrooms and bathroom. The lounge was spacious, with a big dining area, and there was a lovely elevated garden with a BBQ area. It’s the best house we’ve stayed in for a long time, and I’d definitely recommend it.
