Ye Spotted Dogge

This is a fantastic place to stay, top tier. I even spent £900 to extend my car rental for a day so I could stay one more night. Highly recommend it. I meant to write this review years ago and wanted to do it properly, with photos and videos, but lost them all after dropping my phone in the lily pond at Kew Botanical Gardens. Sorry this is a low-effort review.

The beds were heavenly, and the owners were brilliant. This is a lovely, charming hotel full of history, and it ended up being the highlight of our holiday. So glad we stayed here before our virgin cruise.

We were sorry to leave the Spotted Dogge and will book an extra night next time. The courtyard was stunning, and breakfast had a generous buffet. We stayed in the lovely Red Room, with its beautifully preserved historic red panelling and exceptionally comfortable bed. The restored historic property has wonderful attention to detail. Its Old Portsmouth location is great, close to Portsmouth Cathedral, Gun Wharf Quays, and Portsmouth University. From the moment we arrived, everything was taken care of. Easily the best place to stay.

I needed somewhere central with a bit of luxury while meeting old friends in the area, and this place delivered. The room was clean and pleasant, with everything I needed for a short stay, including a comfortable bed, nice bathroom, sofa, seating, and mini bar. The host was welcoming too. The property is exceptional, carefully upgraded while keeping its historic beauty intact. The garden must be a real treat in summer. I’ll definitely return next time I’m in Portsmouth.
