My mum left feeling worse rather than better, and the visit wasn't enjoyable, which was such a letdown for her 60th birthday. When I came to the spa in 2023, the treatments were excellent, it was spotless, and I had no complaints. This time, with the change in management, the quality felt noticeably lower. I'd called twice beforehand and was promised a little surprise for my mum, but nothing was ready. The staff were friendly, though we weren't properly welcomed or told what to expect for the evening. On the phone, we'd been told someone would explain it all. We also weren't offered the welcome drinks that had been included on my previous visit. I was told afternoon tea could be served whenever we wanted. Last time it was brought out beautifully near the spa and pool, which suited a relaxing day. This time we were told it had to be at the bar. I said I wasn't comfortable around alcohol, but the receptionist didn't seem to understand. I asked four times if it could be brought to the spa lounge or bistro, and each time was told, “we can't,” with no explanation beyond “we're under new management.” There was also an unpleasant, drain-like smell that made the place feel far from relaxing.

I arranged a hen weekend here, and the staff did a lot to make it enjoyable. Two of the rooms had a small issue, but reception fixed it straight away. They also helped us with something we'd forgotten, which made a big difference to everyone's stay.

The hotel itself was fantastic aside from the spa. The staff were really friendly, especially in the bar and restaurant, and the complimentary afternoon tea was terrific. Our waitress made sure everything was just right. The bar was well stocked and convenient for a quiet drink or two after dinner. The massage was a different story. I called to book and was offered 25 or 50 minutes. I chose 50 and made it clear my neck was sore and that I wanted the focus there. When I arrived, I was told it was 25 minutes of massage and 25 minutes of something for my face. I asked if they could use all 50 minutes on my neck and was told no. The woman said I could just have the massage without the other treatment, so I assumed I'd pay half, since that meant only 25 minutes. I wasn't refunded. The massage itself was just light touching and didn't work on anything. I felt ripped off and my neck still hurt. I highly recommend the hotel, but wouldn't recommend getting a massage at the spa.

We visited for my wife's birthday using a spa overnight deal, having last been here in 2018. The spa seemed much the same, and the hotel rooms and other areas could do with modernising or redecorating. The bathroom had seen better days too. The deal price was fair, but I wouldn't have been happy with the room if we'd paid full price.
