The Angel of Corbridge Limited

We’d been meaning to stay for years and finally had a two night New Year break at The Angel. It’s a lovely historic pub in the heart of beautiful Corbridge. Our room was clean and the beds comfortable. The bar was warm and welcoming, with a great range of cask ales. The food was excellent, prepared properly from fresh ingredients rather than frozen. The staff were friendly and helpful, and nothing was too much bother. We’ll certainly be back.

I stopped in for a quick pint while passing and was glad I did. It was quiet on a weekday late afternoon, so there were plenty of seats, and the staff were welcoming and friendly. Good selection of drinks, ample parking, and spotlessly clean. I didn’t try the food, but I’ve heard it’s really good and plan to come back soon for a meal. A great local gem.

We booked lunch here for Boxing Day to take my mother-in-law out, and it was very disappointing. The service was poor, the tables were dirty and unset, music was blaring in the small dining room, and there was only one menu for us to share. The printing was wonky and smeared, and drinks took so long that we gave up. We called the Black Bull and went there instead. We’d highly recommend the Black Bull for its atmosphere, food, and service. We won’t return to The Angel. There are plenty of good places in the Hexham/Corbridge area, so there’s no need.

The hotel’s location is great and breakfast was good. That’s about all I can say in its favour. We booked six rooms for nine people, Thursday to Monday, four nights, back in September 2024, with plenty of notice. On Saturday morning, our lead guy got a call saying the hotel was double booked and we’d have to leave. They claimed we’d booked only two nights and told us to abandon our plans and return to the hotel to sort it out. Fortunately, we had their email confirming a four day booking. Even after we showed it to the manager, he said we’d still have to leave because the incoming guests had booked through Booking.com. After we complained, he told us to wait in reception while he looked into it. Forty minutes later, our lead guy was told all nearby hotels were full and we’d have to go to a Travel Lodge six miles away. Meanwhile, another person in our group quickly searched on his phone and found rooms at all the local hotels, though they were obviously more expensive than a Travel Lodge. We were fed up and asked why we should be moved when we’d booked almost a year in advance. We told the manager the four day booking was confirmed, this was their mistake, and we weren’t leaving until Monday. The whole thing left a bad feeling for the rest of the trip, and we definitely wouldn’t stay there again under any circumstances. Read reviews on other sites from guests they’ve had to turn away. Communication was dire too, with our lead guy having to call over and over before he got booking confirmation. The carpets throughout the building were absolutely disgusting, and everything else was or looked dirty. Our room had two sash windows that didn’t work, were filthy, and needed replacing. In the bathroom, several floor tiles were broken, and the pull cord for the light switch had broken and been tied together so many times that the end hung about two feet from the ceiling. Come on, how much does a new cord cost? I can’t understand how this hotel has a four star rating.
