The building is charming, and the back garden is lovely, with a castle that was sacked during Owain Glyndwr’s campaign looking over it. After a long hike in the mountains, I enjoyed the decent selection of beers. The room was clean and comfortable, with a great bathroom, and the staff were helpful enough. The lack of a hot breakfast could be communicated better, as other reviews have said. Still, I can understand it given the difficult situation facing hospitality businesses.

I stayed four nights and would definitely come back. The room was comfortable, the food was very good, and the tea and coffee in the room were topped up regularly. Staff were friendly and helpful, and it's a great location for walking and hiking. There's also electric charging in the large car park. I liked that the cold breakfast buffet was included, while hot food cost extra. I didn't feel pushed to order a full cooked breakfast every day.

We came back for Sunday lunch because our first visit was amazing, but this time was a real letdown. The food was barely warm, the roast potatoes were rock hard, and there were no parsnips or purée and hardly any gravy. They also wanted another £6 for vegetables. Surely veg should come with Sunday lunch. Sorry, but we won't be back.

It was a shame to leave so disappointed, especially since we had a great stay here in August and returned soon after. This time, we were charged £5 per night for our small dog, a fee we weren't told about until checkout. Hot breakfast also cost extra, even though the room was advertised as including breakfast. We paid £140 a night, and that left a sour taste, particularly as breakfast had been included on our previous visit. We only ate at the restaurant once because most of the menu items were unavailable. The prawns and bread were drenched in oil, and the rest of the meal wasn't up to scratch. The atmosphere had changed too. The bar was dead at New Year, which is unusual, and the place didn't feel as friendly as we remembered. There were no locals around. Maybe there's new management? We won't return. In future, we'd highly recommend the bear or the britannia instead.

My Son and I stayed overnight after a hike. The room was very clean, the bed and duvet and pillows were comfortable, and the temperature was just right. I slept well. The bathroom was large and clean with modern fittings, but the electric "Triton" shower was very weak. With no markings to show the current or target temperature, it was nearly impossible to set it comfortably. Breakfast was a big disappointment. I chose the Dragon Inn partly because breakfast was advertised as included, but on arrival we were told it was only a cold continental buffet. I understand the change last year may have been to save money, but the buffet was just cereals, including Weetabix, Rice Krispies, Coco Pops, cheap bran, muesli or corn flakes, plus cheap pots of yoghurt. There was no bread or toaster, croissants, muffins, cheese, meat or fruit. There were different teabags, filter coffee, OJ and AJ. The person running breakfast hadn't switched on the urn, so my first attempt at making tea failed. He fixed it, so it wasn't the end of the world, but it gave me the impression of a lack of care or attention. Owners, I understand moving away from included cooked breakfasts, but please make the change clear when people book. Surely you could at least provide bread and a toaster. There was also some confusion at check-in. My confirmation emails showed I'd booked a twin room, but I was first assigned a double. Apparently, there are often miscommunications between booking systems and the Inn. I'll definitely return to beautiful Crickhowell, but I won't stay at the Dragon Inn.
