Clonyard House Hotel

There’s a great selection of Thai food, plus some Malaysian dishes that are less spicy, which suits me as I prefer milder meals. The staff are friendly and helpful, and often very chatty. I love the place. Rooms are available for convenience, with plenty of parking and spaces for mobile homes, plus free internet. Room 4 is an accessible bedroom with twin beds, and I’ve been told Room 10 is a family room. There are also two bedrooms upstairs in the house.

The hotel had a real charm to it, and we felt at ease there. Our room was spacious, spotless, and had everything we needed, with a lovely outdoor area where we could sit. The staff were excellent, and both dinner and breakfast were delicious. We stayed one night and would happily return.

We’re local and come in for a meal now and then. The staff are consistently friendly and helpful, and we’ve enjoyed the food every time. As vegetarians, we’d love a few more choices on the regular menu. Just before Christmas, we chose the Clonyard because its Christmas menu had a particularly good vegetarian option compared with other places we’d seen nearby. The vegetable wellington was delicious, especially with the mushroom sauce and the selection of vegetables. It made for a really pleasant family lunch before Christmas.

The hotel looks impressive from the front, but the rooms we were shown at the rear, in an annexe style building, felt very tired and dated. The carpet didn’t fit and needed replacing, there were cracks in the ceiling, and the curtains wouldn’t close, which wasn’t ideal on the ground floor. The bathroom was all right, and it seemed they’d tried to improve it, but the mismatched wall coverings and cracks in the roof didn’t help. We arrived after problems with the power, and the heating had only just come on, so the rooms were very cold. It went off overnight and the room became freezing. Breakfast was served in a very cold room too. The man who served us was lovely, attentive and hardworking. I didn’t catch his name, and he wasn’t English, but he was very pleasant. There was nobody at reception when we checked out, so we had to leave the key on the desk.
