My wife spotted Eskdale Castleton on Google Maps while looking for somewhere good to eat. The ratings looked good, and it was dog friendly, so we gave it a try. We were welcomed warmly and there was a nice selection of drinks, including cask ales, keg lagers and ciders. The decor is lovely and everything was spotless. There’s a good choice of food, and the chefs in the open kitchen did a superb job. We ate every course with gusto. Our young waitress was friendly and helpful too. Well done to the whole team, we’d recommend it.

The cost seemed reasonable, and we’ll certainly be back. We had a very enjoyable lunch: the two vegetarians in our group were delighted with their perfectly cooked choices, and my pheasant with panceta and leeks was delicious. Thank you, we’d recommend it.

We came back for our wedding anniversary after dining here several times, and the food was superb again, beautifully presented. The friendly, attentive service is always a pleasure. This time, the staff also made our four-month-old puppy feel so welcome, with treats, her own water bowl and lots of attention. Thanks so much.

The staff were welcoming and the place looked well presented, but the £21 burger was a letdown, especially since it was advertised with triple cooked chips. I can’t believe the chips were cooked that way: they weren’t light and fluffy inside, and I left most of mine. The menu was small, and that was the only thing I could order. I wouldn’t come back. There are plenty of other places with better value and proper triple cooked chips.

The hosts, waitress and kitchen team were friendly, professional, and knew their food, ingredients and drinks. We had a wonderful, relaxing evening here last week, and it’s a real bonus that dogs are welcome. You can enjoy a five-star meal and impeccable service with your dog, or dogs, under the table. What could be better? Thank you, we’ll be back around Easter.
