Hotel Bannatyne Darlington

We left early and booked another hotel, giving up the spa treatment we'd planned because the atmosphere had become so uncomfortable. Reception staff stopped talking and stared as we passed, which felt cliquey and very different from the friendly welcome we'd had the night before. The reception team were understanding and helpful when we explained our decision, and I appreciated that. We'd travelled over 400 miles to stay at Bannatyne Hotel Darlington over Easter for our 8-year wedding anniversary. On Good Friday, everything seemed just right: the staff were warm and helpful, dinner was excellent with huge portions, and the relaxed atmosphere was exactly what we'd hoped for after the drive. But we didn't sleep comfortably. The bedding was so thick and warm that we struggled to sleep, and after the long drive that affected us the next day. Breakfast was also a letdown compared with dinner. When we arrived for our pre-booked meal the next morning, we had to wait to be seated. A staff member acknowledged us without making eye contact. As an autistic person, I understand eye contact isn't comfortable for everyone, and I don't expect it, but there was little basic interaction and the exchange felt unprofessional and awkward. They noted our reservation and room number on a piece of paper, asked briefly, “tea or coffee,” then showed us to a table without any further welcome. It's a shame, because that first evening had been so positive. The uneven comfort and service really affected our stay.

The hotel had a relaxed feel, and we'd happily stay again. My son and I were there for three nights while my sister celebrated her 60th birthday on Saturday. Nicole, the events manager, made sure everything was ready for a fabulous evening, and the staff on duty were excellent. Our spacious room, number 54, had everything we needed. Breakfast was a very good buffet. Thanks to everyone for making it such an enjoyable stay.

Everyone I met on staff was friendly, helpful and accommodating, and I'd stay here again. It's a five-minute walk into town, which is handy. The building is old and the room had some heating problems, but they were easy to sort out. The decor's a little dated, though the rooms were clean and really comfortable.

The dinner menu wasn't huge, but I think most people would find something, and the service was good even with a large party at the next table. The hotel is near the town centre without feeling noisy or busy. It's an older building that seems well kept; our room was clean and a good size, though the bathroom is showing its age. I'd stay again.
