Lion Hotel Exmoor

The bar and restaurant felt welcoming, and the staff were friendly and helpful during our one night stop in mid-October on the way southwest. Monday was pizza night, with a good choice of delicious pizzas. Breakfast was tasty as well, though a little sparse. We could probably have asked for more, but weren't very hungry after the pizza. Our room was small but warm, with a comfortable bed. It looked a bit bare, just white walls and one small picture, but it was clean and fresh. The bathroom could use a little attention around the edges, though it too was very clean. The waste pump was the unsettling part: it made a racket whenever we used the sink, shower or toilet. The hotel is more than 150 years old, so the steep stairs, narrow corridors and sloping floors were no surprise and gave it character. Good value for a short stopover.

The manager and staff made this a five star stay for me. I had more work to do in my room and asked if I could eat dinner there. They were perfectly happy with that, and the rump steak was cooked to perfection. Since I had to leave early and couldn't have breakfast, the staff kindly put together a packed lunch. The room was fine for me, as I mainly needed somewhere to sleep while working around the country, though the one I had could do with a revamp.

The food was amazing and very reasonably priced. The staff were lovely and welcoming when I came in for lunch. Definitely worth a visit.

We stayed at The Lion for two nights and had a lovely time. The room was clean, roomy and comfortable, the food was good, and the service was great.
