Waking up to wild rabbits checking out each tent was kind of magical. I spent one night at South Downs Eco Lodge while walking the South Downs Way over several days. The small, well-kept grassy campsite has a peaceful circular field ringed by tall trees. There’s an eco toilet, plus a nearby hot shower and washing-up block.

The staff made me feel welcome, and I had a clean, nice room and a delicious breakfast. I stayed for a night on my solo South Downs Way trip, and the beautiful setting right on the route made this my favourite place to stay. They also run a number of mental health and environmental projects that are worth checking out. Highly recommended :) I’ll definitely come back.

A great-value spot for backpackers, with all the facilities you need. The location was perfect for our trek along the South Downs Way.

We had a cosy, clean family room in the hostel for a night on the way to a graduation in Portsmouth. The bedding and towels smelled freshly scented, and the shared bathrooms were clean and stocked with eco-friendly toiletries. The communal kitchen was clean and well equipped. We also enjoyed exploring the grounds. It’s a lovely, unusual place to stay, and a handy little base. We’d stay again for longer to walk around the area.

The beds in our private room were comfortable, and it’s a great spot for walking. Noise from the communal area carried down the hallway, so bring earplugs. The duvet had stains and crusty bits, so it didn’t seem to have been checked or cleaned thoroughly. I used the other bed’s duvet, which was fine for the night. The kitchen fridge doesn’t work.
