Ardleigh House

Our original booking cancelled on us at 3 pm on the day, but Ardleigh took us in and we were settled by 5. We really appreciated being rescued at such short notice, and the Twix in the room was a nice bonus. The duvets are enormous. We’ll definitely come back!

The place is spacious and comfortable, with everything needed for a good stay. It’s near a bus stop, so getting around the city was easy, and most attractions were fairly close anyway. The gentleman running it was welcoming and did everything he could to make our visit relaxing. I’d forgotten to mention that my sister is vegan, but he made sure she had suitable breakfast food all the same. I highly recommend staying here and will return when I’m in Edinburgh.

There was plenty of parking, and the buses into town were very good. The B&B itself felt like it had lost its identity: the dining room was Victorian and cluttered, while the bedroom had a 1970s feel, with a big solid pine four-poster bed and heavy curtains. We stayed four days, but the linen and towels weren’t changed. Breakfast didn’t offer much choice of cereals.

At 220eur a night, this was the most expensive place I’ve paid for and had the worst conditions. We came in December for NYE and figured the timing might explain the high price. Cash payment was required, though they did tell us that beforehand. The room we were given wasn’t the one shown in the photos. It looked like a place to store things you no longer use but don’t want to throw away, and it didn’t have the bathroom in the room as the pictures seemed to show. It was freezing, the heater wasn’t enough, and the smell was like an old basement. We spent more time travelling in the car because the room was so uncomfortable, and it was warmer in there. The Wi-Fi was almost unusable.
